Auckland Island coastline
A Hooker's sea lion Phocartus hookeri pup caught unawares at the Coastwatcher's Hut on Kekeno Pt. near Port Ross on the north east Coast of the Island. The mother must give birth to her pup in this location because it is quiet and remote. The amazing thing is that it is some 160m above sea level and trekking back and forth through the dense rata can't be much fun. When "tramping" through the rata forest (which is actually more like crawling) on both Auckland Island and Campbell Island one is always likely to come across a Hooker's very suddenly.

Detailed information on the fauna and flora of the Auckland Islands can be found here at the UN Earthwatch site.
