Campbell Island is approximately 114 sq km in the South Pacific Ocean and is the most southerly part of New Zealand. It lies 675km south of Bluff Peninsula on New Zealand's South Island. It is surrounded by dangerous reefs, but has good natural harbours. After its discovery in 1810 by Frederick Hasselburgh in the Perseverance, whaling and sealing crews used the island as a base and the reamins of the huts and graves of these early visitors can still be seen there. In 1847, French astronomers watched the transit of the planet Venus from the island. It became the site of an important weather station built by the New Zealand government in the 1940s. The station staff are the only inhabitants.
